Term 2
BT Young Scientist
Visiting the BT Young Scientist this year was very interesting. The RDS was filled with fascinating projects that, in many cases, could be prototypes to future breakthroughs in science. Visiting many of the projects and presentations, you could see that so many young people were truly engaged in what was going on, which shows that Ireland is becoming a nation that definitely classifies science very highly.
Musical
Legally Blonde
The Musical was probably the biggest event that took place in the TY calendar.
I can't say that I'm a fan of musicals. I find them cheesy and most of the time I think the songs are awful. But, in an attempt to try to act like a mature person, I decided to put my opinions and biases aside and give the musical my all.
I love singing and acting, but I'm not a huge fan of dancing. I have taken part in multiple choreographed dances in the past, and although I thought I was doing great at the time, looking back at recordings of these acts, I must say my performance was simply horrible. So, I was very skeptical of my “moves”, but after our first lesson I realised that almost everyone was in the same boat as me.
After weeks of rehearsals and performing the musical in front of our classmates alone, it was a great feeling when we finally got up on stage and displayed our hard work. Singing and acting in front of an audience was so much fun and I must say, I enjoyed myself more than I expected.
Carlingford
The Transition Year outing to Carlingford was a brilliant experience for everyone involved. All four classes took part in several outdoor activities during our stay. These activities included Laser Tag, Canoeing, traversing the Sky Park, Archery, Disc Golf and many more! Ziptopia, an obstacle course that mainly consisted of zip lines, was an outstanding favourite amongst most of the 4th years. The course was located in a forest, above, what looked like, an abandoned quarry. Zipping across the quarry was truly exhilarating.
Teamwork was a key part of many of the activities students took part in during our stay in Donegal. Although some activities, such as the Crystal Maze, tested the students’ patience and leadership skills, all the groups worked together superbly.
Back in the Adventure Centre students enjoyed communal viewings of the Winter Olympics, along with amenities, including the neighbouring sweet shop and sports hall.
In summation, the Transition Year Carlingford Trip will definitely be remembered as one of the finest trips this year.
